We have learned to read and write numbers up to 1000 in digits and words in our previous class. We also learnt about the smallest and greatest number of one, two and three digits.

Let us take a quick glance at these numbers.

In addition, in this chapter, we will be learning about the four digits, five digits and six digits numbers.

Numbers from 1000 to 9999

We are familiar with the numbers till 1000.

We use numbers larger than 1000 on a daily basis. Hence, we need to understand numbers beyond 1000.

By adding one to each number starting from 1000, we get numbers beyond 1000.

As shown in the below table:

Now, let us read and understand numbers from 1011 to 1100.

Similarly, further numbers can be written as:

These are the four digits numbers.

The smallest number of four digits is 1000 – One Thousand

The greatest number of four digits is 9,999 – Nine Thousand Nine Hundred Ninety-Nine.

Numbers beyond 9999

By adding one to each number starting from 9999, we get numbers beyond 9999.

9999 + 1 = 10,000 – Ten Thousand

99,999 + 1 = 100,000 – One Lakh.

999,999 + 1 = 10,00,000 – Ten Lakh

99,99,999 + 1 = 1,00,00,000 – One Crore

• The smallest number of five digits is 10,000 – Ten Thousand.
• The smallest number of six digits is 1,00,000 – One Lakh.
• The smallest number of seven digits is 10,00,000 – Ten Lakh.
• The smallest number of eight digits is 1,00,00,000 – One Crore
• The greatest number of five digits is 99,999- Ninety-Nine Thousand Nine Hundred Ninety-Nine.
• The greatest number of six digits is 999,999- Nine Lakh Ninety-Nine Thousand Nine Hundred Ninety-Nine.
• The greatest number of seven digits is 99,99,999- Ninety Nine Lakhs Ninety Nine Thousand Nine Hundred Ninety-Nine.
