The Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (APMO) started in 1989. It is a regional competition for countries in the Asian Pacific region, held once a year. The United States and some other countries also participate in the APMO. Each participating country has a representative in charge of the local APMO organisation. A central committee chooses a paper with five questions to be answered in four hours, releases marking schemes, and selects prize winners.

The regulations for issuing award certificates, in general, are as follows:
The following guidelines are used to determine the overall numbers and levels of gold, silver, and bronze award certificates:
Maximum total number of award certificates = [(n+1)/2],
where n = total number of APMO contestants (when ties occur, increase the number).
***Scores for gold awards ≥ m + 𝝈 |
***Scores for silver awards ≥ m + 𝝈/3 |
***Scores for bronze awards ≥ m – 𝝈/3 |
where m = mean APMO score, and 𝝈 = standard deviation of all the APMO scores |
Each country can receive a maximum of one gold award, two silver awards, four bronze awards, and three Honourable Mentions.
