To compete in the International Biology Olympiad, students in Class 11 and 12 compete in the Indian National Biology Olympiad (INBO). INBO is a CBSE biology exam that begins in Classes 11 and 12 and comprises fundamental questions on the subject. However, we must be familiar with the recent INBO exam pattern and syllabus before applying for the upcoming INBO examination 2022.

Exam Details

All students must pass the National Standard Examination for Biology (NSEB) in order to be eligible for the INBO exam. NSEB 2021-2022 candidates must have been born after July 1, 2002, and be in Class XII or lower as of November 30, 2020. The examination timetable allows students to take numerous subjects. Details can be found on the subject pages. Students who have finished Class XII are not eligible to apply to NSEB.

  • Candidates who do not pass the NSEB exam are automatically exempted from INBO.
  • According to past INBO exam papers, there are 100 points and two sections: Section A and Section B. Section A has 30 questions worth 1 mark each, and section B has 22 questions worth 50 points. Each incorrect answer is given a negative score.
  • This will be a 3-hour exam with two parts: Part 1 (National Standard Examination for Biology) and Part 2 (National Standard Examination for Chemistry) . Below-given is more detailed information on the examinations.

Part I: National Standard Examination in Biology

The National Standard Examination in Biology (NSEB) is a biology examination for higher secondary students in India. It normally takes place at the end of November. The test is being organised by the Association of Teachers in Biological Sciences in collaboration with the Indian Association of Physics Teachers and the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE). This will be a one-hour examination with multiple-choice questions based on Class 10+2 biology and following the NSEB examination format.

Part II: Indian National Biology Olympiad

This exam lasts two hours and features extensive questions that follow the same INBO criteria as in prior years. Candidates who pass the first part will be considered for this phase. The individual score of this part will be used to determine who moves to the next phase, Orientation and Selection Camp.

This information is based on the most recent notification and is subject to change based on the current pandemic scenario. As a result, candidates must continually check the official HBCSE website for any new information.

Frequently Asked Questions on INBO Exam Pattern

Q1

What is the purpose of the Biology Olympiad?

The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education administers the Biology Olympiad Programme, which is a national level test. Candidates for the International Biology Olympiads are chosen through this programme. National Standard Examination in Biology (NSEB), Indian National Biology Olympiad (INBO), Orientation cum Selection Camp (OCSC), Pre-departure Training Camp (PDT), and International Biology Olympiad are the five stages of this programme.
Q2

Who all can take the INBO exam?

To be qualified for the INBO exam, a candidate must have a qualifying score on the NSEB, which is the first level of the Biology Olympiad Programme (National Standard Examination in Biology).
Q3

Why are some students having difficulty in qualifying INBO?

Since it is an NSEB testing field, the level of competitiveness is extremely high. The NSEB and INBO syllabuses are also quite similar. However, students should not give up; they should aim to pass the INBO round on their first attempt. Hard work and practice will always help students develop their skills and lead to success in tough exams like INBO.
Q4

How is the IBO team selected in OCSC?

The Orientation Cum Selection Camp (OCSC) compiles a list of INBO’s best performances. These winners will receive a cash prize of Rs.5000. This OCSC round is used to assess applicants’ theoretical and practical skills in the discipline of biology. Finally, 4-6 students are chosen for the Indian team for the IBO depending on their performances.
