Stages of the Biology Olympiad

The Biology Olympiad Programme is organised by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) in partnership with the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE). This programme is held to select candidates for the International Biology Olympiad at the 10+2 level from across India. The Biology Olympiad Programme is divided into five phases:

Stage 1

The Biology Olympiad Competition begins with the first and most important level. All students must enrol in NSEB to be considered for the programme. Students who pass the NSEB exam progress to the next stage.

Stage 2

It is the second stage of the Olympiad Programme and evaluates students’ basic biology knowledge. INBO is only available to those who have passed the NSEB exam. Only 35 candidates are chosen for the next round, which includes questions based on the CBSE biology syllabus.

Stage 3

The top 35 applicants who qualified in the INBO round are picked for the OCSC round. The purpose of this Orientation and Selection Camp is to test the theoretical and practical knowledge of the pupils. The weighting is divided 60 per cent for theoretical content and 40 per cent for practical content. For the following phase of the competition, only one Indian team of four members is chosen.

Stage 4

A training session is organised by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education for the selected Indian team. This training is offered to the team to help them prepare for the International Biology Olympiad (IBO), which is the final round.

Stage 5

The Indian team competes in IBO against many other foreign teams, with two lead instructors and a scientific observer.
