The Indian National Chemistry Olympiad (INChO) is a competitive chemistry test conducted in India every year. INChO’s theoretical section is held every year in late January or early February. The Indian Association of Chemistry Teachers organises the test. In November of the preceding year, high school students (usually in grades 11 and 12) must pass the National Standard Examination in Chemistry (NSEC). For the INChO, only the top 1% of the 30,000+ students who take the NSEC are selected.

As of 2022, the question paper had a recent trend of 80 multiple-choice questions. The format for all multiple-choice questions is the same. There are four options from which the student must select the correct one. Negative marking is also applicable in this type of exam. The questioning format is typical, and focuses mostly on the student’s conceptual understanding rather than their ability to memorise. We will discuss the INChO Exam pattern 2022 in detail.
Exam Pattern for INChO 2022-23
The first two phases of the Olympiad will be combined into a single stage dubbed the Indian National Olympiad under the new examination system. According to the IAPT, each test will consist of a single examination with two sections that will be taken in one sitting.

Five Stages of INChO
The Chemistry Olympiad in India has five distinct levels or stages, which are as follows:
Stage I: National Standard Examination in Chemistry (NSEC)
Stage II: Indian National Chemistry Olympiad (INChO)
Stage III: Orientation cum Selection Camp in the subject of Chemistry (OCSC)
Stage IV: Pre-departure Training Camp for IChO (PDT)
Stage V: Participation in International Chemistry Olympiad (ICHO)
- The exam usually begins towards the end of January or the start of February.
- The HBCSE is in charge of the examination (Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education).
- It’s a form of the subjective question paper.
- INChO has a course that is quite comparable to the NSEC test. However, the exam’s complexity has increased.
- IAPT gives a merit certificate to students who qualify for the InChO.
