Observations of Magnetic Permeability

Magnetism is one of the fundamental forces of the universe. The magnetic properties of different materials include the ability of a material to become a temporary magnet, permanent magnet and also the inability to become a magnet.

Magnetic Permeability

What is Magnetic Permeability?

Magnetic permeability is the measurement of the ability of a material to direct magnetic flux by supporting the formation of the magnetic field. It is an important physical property of any material. In this experiment let us learn about the magnetic permeability and why it is important.

To check if the salt solution will have a slower rate of flow than the tap water under the influence of a strong magnetic field.

Materials Required

Magnetic Permeability

  1. 400 ml of water.
  2. 2 large permanent magnets.
  3. 2 beakers.
  4. 50 grams of salt.
  5. 1 burette.
  6. 1 stopwatch.
  7. 1 measurement cylinder.

  1. Add 200ml of water into the measuring cylinder, which has to pore through the burette. Observe the flow rate of water. Note the time taken for 200ml of water without any magnetic field applied.
  2. Now, place two permanent magnets at the bottom of the burette and again measure the flow rate of the water.
  3. Mix about 50 grams of salt into 200ml of water. Add the water in the measuring cylinder, so that it flows through the burette. Now measure the water flow rate.

Note: While taking the reading of water flow rate, repeat at least for 5 to 6 times and get the average rate.

This experiment will explain the flow rate of both normal water and salt solution water are lower when two magnetic fields are applied. The flow rate of water with salt solution is lower than the normal water under magnetic field.
