Question

1. A metal reacts with chlorine and forms two chlorides A and B. A has 77.45% and B has 84.93% of chlorine. Calculate the mass of chlorine that combines with one gram of metal and show that the law of multiple proportions is obeyed.

Solution

Dear student!

Let 100 gm of A has = 77. 45 gm Chlorine ,

And, 100 gm of B has = 84.93 gm chlorine

Here weight of chlorine (A) =77.45 gm

Weight of metal = 100-77.45 = 22.55

Similarly weight of chlorine(B) =84.93 gm

Weight of metal = 100-84.93 = 15.07

Hence, 1 gm metal will react with = 84.93 /15.07 = 5.63 gm of chlorine

Hence, in case (A)

22.55 gm of metal combines with 77.45 gm of chlorine

so, 1 gm metal will react with,

= 77.45 / 22.55 = 3.43 gm--.---2

Here,in both the cases A and B the weight of chlorine which combines with fixed amount of metal ( 1 gm) are 3.43gm and 5.63 gm which are in the simple ratio of 5:3

Hence the chlorides follow the law of multiple proportion.
