Question

Question 2.1
Write the balanced equation for the following chemical reaction:
Hydrogen + Chlorine → Hydrogen chloride

Open in App
Solution

The equation in which the number of atoms of all the molecules is equal on both sides of the equation is known as a balanced chemical equation.
1. The unbalanced equation must be obtained from the chemical formulae of the reactants and the products.
H2+Cl2⟶HCl
2. The total number of atoms of each element on the reactant side and the product side must be compared.

ElementsNo. of atoms on the Reactant side No. of atoms on the Product side
H 2 1
Cl 2 1

3. Now, stoichiometric coefficients are added to molecules containing an element that has a different number of atoms in the reactant side and the product side.

The coefficient must balance the number of atoms on each side.
Hence we will assign coefficient 2 on the right side(Product) of the reaction, we get
H2+Cl2⟶2HCl

The balanced equation for the following chemical reactions is given:
H2(g)+Cl2(g)→2HCl (g)
