Question

12. A piece of metal weighs 46 g in air and 30 g in a liquid of density 1.24 x 103 kg m-3 kept at 27°C. When the temperature of the liquid is raised to 42°C, the metal piece weighs 30.5 g. The density of the liquid at 42°C is 1.20 x 103 kg m -3. Calculate the coefficient of linear expansion of the metal.

Solution

Dear Student

Loss in mass of the metal =mass of liquid displaced =46-30 =16 gVolume of metal at 27oC=Volume of liquid displaced at 27oCV1=16density of liquid=16 g1.24 gcm-3=12.903 cm3Similarly volume of metal at 42oCV2=46-30.51.2 gcm-3=12.917 cm3Coefficient of cubical expansion of metalγ=V2-V1V1T2-T1=12.917-12.90312.90342-27=7.23×105 oC-1Since γ=3αα=13γ=137.23×105 oC-1=2.41×105 oC-1
