Question

A 10 kg iron dumbbell is dropped from a height of 80 cm onto a stone floor. If the dumbbell comes to rest after hitting the floor, how much momentum (in kg m s1 ) will the floor acquire? Take the acceleration caused in the dumbbell due to gravity, to be 10 m s2
  1. 40

Solution

The correct option is A 40
Given:
The mass of the dumbbell, m=10 kg
Height, h=80 cm=80×102 m
Acceleration due to gravity, g=10 m s2
Initial velocity of the dumbbell, u=0
According to the third equation of motion,
v2u2=2gh
Final velocity of the dumbbell,

v=u2+2gh

v=0+2×10×80×102

v=16=4 m s1

According to the law of conservation of momentum, the momentum acquired by the floor = the final momentum of the dumbbell
mv=10×4=40 kg m s1
