Question

A 25g chunk of dry ice is placed in an empty 0.75 litre wine bottle and tightly closed. The final pressure (atm) that would be in the bottle after all $$CO_2$$ has evaporated and temperature reaches to $${ 25 }^{ o}$$C is________.


Solution

Dry ice means for solid $$CO_2$$

$$\therefore$$ at T=298 $$w_{CO_2}=20g $$ $$M.W _{CO_2}=44gmol^{-1} ,V=0.75$$ litre

PV=(w/M)RT

$$P\times 0.75=(20/44)\times 0.0821\times 298$$

$$PCO_2$$=14.877atm

Therefore, pressure inside the bottle =$$P_{CO_2}$$ + atmospheric pressure due to air in bottle

$$=14.877 + 1=15.877atm$$

 nearest integer is 16.
