Question

A ball of mass 0.5 kg slows down from a speed of 5 m s1 to that of 3 m  s1. Calculate the change in kinetic energy of the ball.


Solution

Given, 

m = 0.5 kg

Initial velocity, u=5 ms1

Final velocity, v=3 ms1

Kinetic energy, K=12mv2

Initial Ki=12mu2=12×0.5×52=14×25=6.25 J

Final Kf=12mv2=12×0.5×32=14×9=2.25 J

Change in Kinetic energy, ΔK=KfKi=2.256.25=4 J
