Question

A bomb weighing 3.7 kg is dropped from an aeroplane flying horizontally at 100 ms1.  If the plane is 1 km high, what is the horizontal distance that the bomb travels before reaching the ground?
(Take g=10 m/s2)

A
37000 m
loader
B
3700 m
loader
C
37×109 m
loader
D
10002 m
loader

Solution

The correct option is D 10002 m
Height of the plane from the ground =1000 m
Using second equation of motion,
h=uyt+12gt2
t=2hg
t=2×100010
Horizontal distance that the bomb travels before reaching the ground
x=vx×t
x=100×2×100010=10002 m

Alternate solution:

Horizontal distance covered by a body falling from from height h with initial horizontal velocity u
x=u2hg=100×2×100010=10002 m
