Question

A boy is holding a light rope hung from the roof and is in equilibrium. Now the tension in the rope is found to be 500N. If the same boy were climbing with the help of the same rope with an upward acceleration of $$2m/s^{2}$$, the tension in the rope now will be
 (take $$g = 10m/s^{2}$$)

Solution

The correct option is D 600 N
In the first case, the tension balance by the gravitational force by the boy. i.e $$mg=500$$
$$m=\dfrac{500}{10}=50\ kg$$
when boy is climbing, the equation motion $$ma=T-mg$$ , given $$a=2m/s^2$$
$$T=ma+mg=50\times2+500=600\ N$$
