Question

A boy of height 1.5 m with eye level at 1.4 m stands before a plane mirror of length 0.75 m fixed on the wall. The height of the lower edge of the mirror above the floor is 0.8 m. If the boy wants to see his feet in the mirror, then select the correct option.
  1. He will not be able to see his feet
  2. He will be able to see his feet
  3. He will be able to see his feet depend on his distance from mirror
  4. Data insufficient

Solution

The correct option is A He will not be able to see his feet
Let AC be the height of the boy, BC be the height of his eyes and C be his feet.

We know that, we can see an object if it lies in the field of view.
Here, from the ray diagram, we can see that, BEFGEF
GE=BE=1.40.8=0.6 m
Here, EC>EG, therefore, his feet lies outside the field of view, hence, he cannot see his feet.
