Question

A bulb emits light having λ=4950 A. The bulb is rated as 100 watt and 15% of the energy is emitted as light. If the number of photons emitted by the bulb per second are x×1019, then x is (take Planck's constant h = 6.6×1034 Js

Solution

Given,
Power of the bulb =100 watt=100 J s1
So, the energy released by the bulb in the form of light per second =100×15100 J=15 J
Again, the wavelength of emitted light, λ=4950 A
We know,
E=nhv=n×hcλ=Energy emitted by bulb in the form of light
Thus,
n×hc4950×1010=15 J

n×6.6×1034×3×1084950×1010=15 J

n=3.75×1019
