Question

A Coast Guard cutter detects an unidentified ship at a distance of 20.0km in the direction 15.00 east of north. The ship is traveling at 26.0km/h on a course at 40.00 east of north. The Coast Guard wishes to send a speedboat to intercept and investigate the vessel. If the speedboat travels at 50.0km/h, in what direction should it head? Express the direction as a compass bearing with respect to due north.

Solution

Choose the x axis along the 20km distance. The y components of the displacements of the ship and the speedboat must agree:
(26km/h)tsin(40.0015.00)=(50km/h)tsinα
α=sin1(11.0km/h50km/h)=12.70
The speedboat should head,
15.00+12.70=27.70 E of N.
