Question

A constant force of 12 N is acting on an object. Under its influence, the object is displaced through 5 m in the direction of the force. What is the work done by the force on the object?

Solution

1. Given the force acting on the object (F) = 12 N
Displacement in the direction of the force (s) =5 m
Let W is the work done by the force F on the object.
2. Work is said to be done on an object by a force if the object moves a certain distance.
Work done can be calculated as-
W=(Fcosθ)×sHereW=worddone(j)F=forceapplied(N)s=displacement(m)θ=anglebetweenFands----------------------------- (I)
3. Substituting the value of F, s, and cosθ in equation (I).
W=12cos0°×5Sincecosθ=0°=1(Fandsareinsamedirection)W=12×5orW=60J
Hence the work done by the force on the object is 60J
