Question

A cylindrical piston of mass M slides smoothly inside a long cylinder closed at one end , enclosing a certain mass of a gas. The cylinder is kept with its axis horizontal. Solution

The correct option is C T=2πMhPA
Let the piston be displaced through distance x towards left then volume decrease and pressure increase. If the process is take place gradually.
So, it is isothermal

P1V1=P2V2

PV=(P+ΔP)(VΔV)

ΔP is increase in pressure, ΔV is decrease in volume
PV=PV+ΔPVPΔVΔPΔV (Very small value) so neglect

ΔPVPΔV=0

ΔP(Δh)=P(Δx)ΔP2P.xh

This excess pressure is responsible for providing the resting force (F) to the P is ton of mass of M

F=ΔP.A=PAxh --------------(1)

(F)=kx --------------(2)

On comparing equation (1) and (2)

K = Mw2 = PAh

w=PAMh

T=2πMhPA
