(a) Define nutrition. Why is nutrition necessary for an organism?

A)Nutrition is the process of consumption of food, its digestion and complete absorption by the body. Nutrition is essential for an organism as it provides energy to perform several activities. Moreover, it provides immunity to fight against several diseases and infection and help in performing basic daily activities.

B)

1. Autotrophic mode of nutrition:
It is also known as holophytic mode (plant-like nutrition). Organisms can synthesize all the essential nutrients required for them from inorganic substrates (CO2, NH3, nitrates, water etc) present in the environments.Eg. Green plants, Green algae

2. Heterotropic mode of nutrition:
organisms cannot synthesize their food by themselves rather they depend on the food prepared by Autotrophs (directly or indirectly). Such organisms are known as heterotrophs. ex. Humans, Tiger, etc
