Question

(a) Define pressure.
(b) What is the relation between pressure, force and area ?
(c) Calculate the pressure when a force of 200 N is exerted on an area of :

(i) 10m2
(ii) 5m2

Open in App
Solution

Pressure is the amount of force applied perpendicular to the surface of an object per unit area.

Mathematically:

{\displaystyle p={\frac {F}{A}},}

where:

p is the pressure, F is the magnitude of the normal force, A is the area of the surface on contact.

Pressure is a scalar quantity

Pressure=ForceArea
When Force is exerted on 10 m2 area......
P = 200/10 = 20 Pa.
When force is exerted on 5 m2 area........
P = 200/5 = 40 Pa.
