Solution

Desiccator:-

  • A desiccator is a bowl of thick glass with a lid and also there is a perforated ceramic disc that separates it into two partitions.
  • The drying agent which is the desiccator is placed beneath the silica disc and the chemical that needs to be dried or kept in a dry condition is placed above the silica disc.
  • These desiccators are basically used to keep a low humidity in the atmosphere with the help of these drying agents.
  • The lower compartment contains a lump of silica gel, freshly calcined quicklime, Drierite, or anhydrous calcium chloride(CaCl2)(which is not as effective).
  • These chemicals absorb the water vapour and thus act as drying agents.
  • These desiccators should not be left out open, except for the transfer of the sample in and out of it.

Therefore, a desiccator is an air-tight glass vessel with a suitable drying agent, anhydrous calcium chloride(CaCl2) placed at the bottom of the vessel
