The areas shown in the figure are squares.

Let the side of area, a be A, side of area, b be B and side of area c be C,

Area a=A2, Area b=B2 and Area c=C2

The area of land received by the first son is

Area a+ Area b=A2+B2

The area of land received by second son is

Area c=C2

By applying Pythagoras Theorem in the given figure,

A2+B2=C2

So, area was equally divided.
