Question

A glass flask of volume one litre at 0C is filled full with mercury at this temperature. The flask and mercury are now heated to 100C .How much mercury will spill out, if coefficient of volume expansion of mercury is 1.82×104/C and linear expansion of glass is 0.1×104/C respectively?

The correct option is B 0.0172litre
The volume of glass,
V=1+0.1×104×100=1.001litre
the increase in volume of glass ΔV=1.001litre
Now volume of mercury at 1000C is given by,
Vm=1+1.82×104×100=1.0182litre
the amount of mercury will spill out 1.01821.0010=0.0172 litre
Hence,
option (B) is correct answer.
