Question

A hockey ball of mass 200g travelling at 10m s1 is struck by a hockey stick so as to return it along its original path with a velocity at 5m s1. Calculate the change of momentum occurred in the motion of the hockey ball by the force applied by the hockey stick.

Open in App
Solution

Initial velocity of the ball, u=10 ms1 (- sign shows the opposite direction)
Final velocity of the ball, v=5 ms1
Mass of the ball, m=200 g=0.2 kg

Net change in the momentum of the ball, ΔP=PfPi
ΔP=mvmu=m×5m×(10)
ΔP=15×m=15×0.2=3 kg m s1
