Question

A hollow metallic sphere with external diameter 8 cm and internal diameter 4 cm is melted and moulded into a cone having base radius 4 cm. The height of the cone is

(a) 12 cm (b) 14 cm (c) 15 cm (d) 18 cm

Solution

internal diameter of hollow sphere is 4 cm.

internal radius of hollow sphere r = 4/2= 2 cm

external diameter of hollow sphere is 8 cm.

external radius of hollow sphere R = 8/2= 4 cm.

volume of the metal =
4 over 3 straight pi open parentheses straight R cubed minus straight r cubed close parentheses equals 4 over 3 straight pi open parentheses 4 cubed minus 2 cubed close parentheses equals 4 over 3 straight pi open parentheses 64 minus 8 close parentheses equals 4 over 3 straight pi cross times 56 space cm squared

radius of the cone r subscript c = 4 cm

let the height of the cone be h cm.

volume of the cone = volume of the metal
1 third πr subscript straight c squared straight h equals 4 over 3 straight pi cross times 56 straight r subscript straight c squared straight h equals 4 cross times 56 4 squared straight h equals 4 cross times 56 straight h equals 56 over 4 equals 14 space cm
therefore the height of the cone is 14 cm.
