A hydrocarbon on combustion gives ${C O}_{2}$ and $H_{2} O$ in a volume ratio of 2 : 1, under similar conditions of temperature and pressure. What is the empirical formula of the hydrocarbon?

As we know that the balanced chemical reaction for the combustion is-
$C_{x} H_{y} + (x + \frac{y}{4}) O_{2} ⟶ x C O_{2} + \frac{y}{2} H_{2} O$
Now according to the question,
$x = 2 \times \frac{y}{2} = y$
Thus the empirical formula of hydrocarbon is $C H$ .
