Lift is accelerating downwards, so acceleration of lift w.r.t. ground  $$a_{lg} = a$$
Acceleration of ball w.r.t. ground  $$a_{bg} = g$$
Acceleration of ball w.r.t. lift   $$a_{bl} = a_{bg} - a_{lg} = g-a$$
