A man of 50 kg is standing at one end on a boat of length 25 m and mass 200 kg.If he starts running and when he reaches the other end , he has a velocity $$2ms^{-1}$$ with respect to the boat.The final velocity of the boat is (in $$ms^{-1}$$).

Solution

The correct option is A 2/5
Let final velocity of boat be $$v$$.

So velocity of man with respect to ground is $$2+v$$

As Center-of-mass of system should remain at rest, in absence of external force, 
$$50(2+v) + 200v = 0\implies v=-\dfrac{2}{5}m/s$$
negative sign idicates that the velocity of boat is in opposite direction to that of the man.
