Solution

The correct option is C

(0 - 6.3 ) eV

If an electron receives 10 eV then it might come out if the energy incident is more than the work function of the metal.

But not all electrons will have the maximum energy.

Only few electrons use this energy most optimally and come out with the maximum kinetic energy i.e.(energy incident- work function) in this case will be 10-3.7 eV= 6.3eV.

Most of the electrons lose some energy in collisions or are tightly bound to the metal surface.Even if they are able to come out, they possess a comparatively lesser kinetic energy.

If an electron after receiving 10 eV of energy encounters a collision and loses 2 eV, it will be left with only 8 eV. This electron will come out with (8-3.7) eV=4.3 eV of energy only.

There are many electrons and many collisions happening, only the maximum and minimum are fixed. The electrons coming out can have energies in the range (0 – 6.3) eV.
