Solution

The correct option is D 4:1
HCOOHH2SO4−−−H2OCO

(COOH)2H2SO4−−−H2OCO+CO2
The volume decreases by 1/6th. The decrease in the volume is due to CO2. The volume of carbon dioxide is one sixth the total volume (sum of the volumes of CO and CO2).
Hence, VCO2VCO+VCO2=16=15+1.

The ratio of VCO to VCO2 is 5:1.
For every L of CO2 produced from oxalic acid, 1 L of CO is produced from oxalic acid. CO produced from formic acid is 51=4 L.
Thus, the ratio of formic acid to oxalic acid is 4:1.
