Question

A mixture of formic acid and oxalic acid is heated with concentration H2SO4. The gases produced are collect and on its treatment, with a KOH solution the volume of the gas decreased by one-sixth. Calculate the molar ratio of the two acids in the original mixture.

Solution

Concentrated H2SO4 is a dehydrating agent.
HCOOH+H2SO4CO+H2SO4H2O
H2C2O4+H2SO4CO+CO2+H2SO4H2O
Let moles of HCOOH be x and moles of H2C2O4 be y
Moles of CO produced from HCOOH=x
Moles of CO produced from H2C2O4=y
Moles of CO2 produced from H2C2O=y
Total moles of gases =(x+2y) of which CO2 is y moles
On heating with KOH, CO2 is absorbed
Volume decreased by 1/6th
Fraction of CO2 present =16=yx+2y
x+2y=6y
x=4y
x:y=4:1
HCOOH:H2C2O4=4:1
