Solution

Liquids that mix with each other is called miscible liquids.

Fractional distillation is a process of separation of miscible liquids

  • Liquids which are to be separated taken in the distillation flask and heated, vapors then passed through glass beads packed in a column (fractionating column)
  • Liquid with a higher boiling point will condense and fall back to the distillation flask
  • Liquid with a lower boiling point will go into the column and moves out of it and pass through the condenser and collected

Therefore, a mixture of two or more miscible liquids for which the difference in boiling points is less than 25oc, can be separated by the process called fractional distillation
