Question

A monochromatic beam of light is incident at 60 on one face of an equilateral prism of refractive index n and emerges from the opposite face making an angle θ(n) with the normal (see the figure). For n=3 the value of θ is 60 and dθdn=m. The value of m is .

Solution

By snells law

1sin 60=n sin r1 (1)

d.w.r n

0=sinr1+n cos r1dr1dn(r1=30, n=3)

dr1dn=13 (2)

By apply snells law

n sin r2=1 sin θ

n sin (60r1)=1 sin θ

sin (160r1)+n cos (60r1)dr1dn=cos θdθdn

By solving above equation dθdn=2
3×sin30=sinθθ=60

Also, sin θ=n sin 30=n2

cosθdθdn=12dθdn=12cos60

m=1.
