A natural gas may be assumed to be a mixture of methane and ethane only. On complete combustion of 10 litre of gas at STP, the heat evolved was 474.6kJ. Assuming ΔHcombCH4=894 kJ mol1 and ΔHcombC2H6=1500 kJ.
Calculate the percentage composition of the mixture by volume.

(10x)litreC2H6; mole of C2H6=(10x)/22.4
Heat evolved =x22.4×894+(10x)22.4×1500
474.6=x22.4×894+(10x)22.4×1500
x=0.745, %CH4=74.5%
