Open in App
Solution

Let x be the number.

Increase in the number =40%ofx

=40100×x

=25×x=2x5

Increased number=x+2x5

=5x+2x5=7x5

The resulting number decreased by 40%

Decrease in the number =40%of7x5

=25×7x5=14x25

New number =7x5-14x25

=35x-14x25

=21x25

The net decrease =x-21x25

=25x-21x25=4x25

Net % decrease =4x25x×100

=4x25×1x×100=4×4=16%

Hence, the net percent decrease =16%
