Question

A parallel beam of light (λ=5000 A) is incident at an angle α=30 with the normal to the slit plane in a Young’s double slit experiment. Assume that the intensity due to each slit at any point on the screen is I0. Point O is equidistant from s1 and s2. The distance between slits is 1mm and between slits and screen is 3m.

Solution

The correct options are
A The intensity at O is 4I0
C The intensity at a point on the screen 4m from O is 4I0

For O
Δx=dsinθ0
Δx=1(12)
Δx=0.5 mm and λ=5000 A
Δx=nλ (with value of n = integer)
So, at O maxima occurs,
and I=4I0
at Y=4m
Δx=d(sin θsin θ0)orΔx=d(sin θ+sin θ0)
=1(4512)or1(45+12)
Δx=0.3 mm or Δx=1.3 mm
Again these are multiple of λ
So, maxima at these points.
