Let the total distance covered by the particle be S. Given that, particle covers S2 with a speed of 3m/s.
The time taken to cover this distance is, t1=S23
or, t1=S6
Let the time taken to complete the other half distance be 2t2. We have,
t2×4.5+t2×7.5=S2
or, 12t2=S2
or, t2=S24
The average speed vavg=total distancetotal time
or, vavg=St1+t2
Using t1=S6 and t2=S24, we get,
vavg=SS6+S24
or, vavg=4m/s, is our required answer.
