For a concave mirror, if the object distance is less than the focal length, then a virtual and erect image is formed.

On increasing the object distance beyond the focal length, image formed is real and inverted.
Only a concave mirror can form both virtual and erect image and real inverted image.

For convex mirror, image formed is always virtual.
Hence the mirror is concave.
