Question

A ray of light travelling through air, falls on the surface of a glass slab at an angle i. It is found that the angle between the reflected and refracted ray is 90o. If the speed of light in glass is 2×108m/s, find the angle of incidence. (c = 3×108m/s)

Solution

Since, μ=speedoflightinvacuumspeedoflightinmedium

μg=3×1082×108=1.5

r=90i

Hence from Snell's law,

μ1sini=μ2sinr

1sini=32sin(90i)

tani=32

i=tan1(3/2)=56.30
