Question

A reactor is developing energy at the rate of 32MW. Calculate the required number of fissions per second of 92U235. Assume that energy per fission is 200MeV.

Open in App
Solution

Rate at which energy is developed Et=32MW=32×106Js
Energy generated per fission Ef=200MeV=200MeV×106eV/MeV×1.6×1019J/eV
Ef=32×1012 J
So, number of fissions required per second N=32×106J/s32×1012J
N=1018 fissions per second
