Question

A rod of negligible heat capacity has length 40 cm, area of cross-section 1.0 cm2 and thermal conductivity 100 W/mC. The temperature of one end is maintained at 0 C and that of the other end is slowly and linearly varied from 0C to 60C in 10min. Assuming no loss of heat through the sides, find the total heat transmitted (in J) through the rod in these 10min

Solution

Given, Length =40 cm

Area of cross section =1.0 cm2

Thermal conductivity =100 W/mC

Time =10min

Temperature as a function of time is given as

T=60600tC=110tC

dQdt=kAdTdx

Integrating both sides, we get

Q0dQ=(10×60)0(kA0.4)0.1 tdt

Q=100×1×104×0.1 t20.8|6000=450 J
