A saleman's commission is $5\%$ on all sales upto Rs. $10,000$ and $4\%$ on all sales exceeding this. He remits Rs. $31,100$ to his parent company after deducting his commission. Find the total sales.

Let total sales is Rs $x$

Given $5\%$ commission on sale up to Rs $10000$

Then $5\%$ of sale 10000 $=\frac{5}{100}\times 10000=500$ Rs

Then other sale more than $10000=x-10000$

So commission on sale more than $10000=\frac{4}{100}\times (x-10000)$

So total commission on sales $=\frac{4}{100}\times (x-10000)+500$

So remit $=x-[\frac{4}{100}\times (x-10000)+500]$

But given total remit is Rs 31100

$\therefore x-[\frac{4}{100}\times (x-10000)+500]=31100$

$\Rightarrow 25x-x+10000-12500=31100\times 25$

$\Rightarrow 24x=777500-10000+12500$

$\Rightarrow 24x=780000$

$\Rightarrow x=32500$ Rs

Then total sales is Rs. $32500$
