Question

A satellite becomes unstable in its orbit and begins to fall towards Earth In the process the satellite gets heated up. If the satellite had a potential energy of 10000 J initially and by the time it reaches the surface of the Earth it attains a kinetic energy of 5000 J, then how much energy was lost in the form of heat?

Solution

The correct option is C 5000 J
Apply the law of conservation of energy.

Potential energy is converted to kinetic energy and heat energy.
So 10000 J = 5000 J + heat energy
Therefore, heat energy = 10000 - 5000 = 5000 J
