Question

A shopkeeper allows two successive discount of $$15\%$$ and $$10\%$$ on the marked price of an article. Find the marked price of a article which he sells for Rs. $$1200$$.

Solution

Total discount of $$10\%$$ and $$15\% =$$ $$10+15-\dfrac{150}{100}=23.5$$%
Discount $$= 23.5\%$$ of marked price
Let the marked price be $$x$$.
$$=\dfrac{23.5}{100}\times x=0.235x$$
Selling price $$=$$ marked price $$-$$ discount
$$\Rightarrow 1200 = x - 0.235x $$
$$\Rightarrow 1200 = 0.765x$$
$$\Rightarrow x = 1568.62$$
Therefore, marked price $$=$$ Rs. $$1568.62$$.
