Question

A small block of mass m kept at the left end of a large block of mass M and length l. The system can slide on a horizontal road. The system is started towards right with an initial velocity v. The friction coefficient between the road and bigger block is μ and that between the blocks is μ/2. Find the time elapsed before the smaller block separates from the bigger block.

Solution

Let both are two move, then block will be the first acted upon f1. This f1 will reduce its velocity and try to move ahead of m so f2 will again act on m in left direction and on the right.
f1=μ(m1m)g
f2=μ2(mg)
f2=ma2a2=μg2
f1f2=ma1μ(m+m)gμmg2=ma1
O1=μMg+μMg2m=μg+μmg2m
w.r.t. m
and= a1a2=μg+μmg2MMg2=μg2(M+mM)
Find= vv=0
then, l=Vmt+12μint2
=12(mg2)(M+mM)t2
t=4ml(M+m)μg .
