Question

A tennis ball of mass 0.11 kg travelling at 40 m per second hits a wall head on and bounces of returning along the same path at 30 M per second calculate the change in velocity of the ball as well as the change in momentum of that ball including the unit in your answer

Open in App
Solution

Mass=0.11kg
Initial velocity, u=+40m/s
Final velocity, v=-30m/s

Change in velocity=Final velocity- Initial velocity
=v-u
=-30 - 40
=-70m/s

Change in momentum=mv-mu
=m(v-u)
=0.11kg x (-70m/s)
=-7.7 kgm/s

The negative sign shows the direction, which is opposite to the initial velocity.
