Question

A train takes 2 h to reach station B from station A, and then 3 h to return from station B to station A. The distance between the two stations is 200 km. Find : (i) the average speed, (ii) the average velocity of the train.


Solution

Total distance   $$D  = 200+200 = 400\ km$$
Average speed    $$|V_{avg}| = \dfrac{Total  \ distance}{Total \  time}$$
$$\therefore \ |V_{avg}| = \dfrac{400}{2+3} = 80 \ km/h$$
Displacement   $$S = 0$$
Average velocity  $$V_{avg} = \dfrac{Total  \ displacement}{Total \ time}$$
$$\therefore \ V_{avg} = \dfrac{0}{2+3} = 0 \ km/h$$
