Question

A watch sold for $$Rs\  448$$ gives a profit of only $$12\%$$. Find the profit $$\%$$ if the selling price has been $$Rs\  512$$.

Solution

Let cost price of watch be $$Rs.\ x$$
Profit $$=Rs.\ \dfrac {12x}{100}$$
$$\therefore \ $$ Selling price  $$=Rs.\ \left (x+\dfrac {12x}{100}\right) =Rs.\ \dfrac {112x}{100}$$

According to the problem

$$448=\dfrac {112x}{100}$$

$$\therefore \ x=400$$

$$\therefore \ $$ Cost price of eatch $$=Rs.\ 400$$

New Selling price $$=Rs.\ 512$$

$$\therefore \ $$ Profit $$=Rs.\ (512-400)=Rs.\ 112$$

$$\therefore \ $$ Profit $$\% =\dfrac {112}{400}\times 100=\boxed {28\%}$$
