Solution

(a)

  • The food grains obtained by harvesting the crops are dried in the sunshine before storing, to reduce the moisture content.
  • The large-scale storage of Food grains like wheat and rice is done in two ways :
  1. In gunny Bags.
  2. Ingrain Silos.
  • Gunny Bags: The most common method of storing food grains on large scale is to store in gunny bags and stitch it tightly and they will be placed one over the other in go-downs where pesticide solutions will be sprayed on the stacked gunny bags to protect the grains from pest during storage.

  • Grain Silos: In this method, specially designed big and tall cylindrical structures are used to store food grains where they have inbuilt mechanism for the protection of grains from pests.

(b) Advantage of storing food grains in gunny bags:

  1. Food grains are often required to be stored for a certain duration of time before they can be transported to the desired location.
  2. During this time, storage in gunny bags performs a very important function of protecting the food grains from the moisture and the external environment, thereby preventing the growth of bacteria and fungi in the food grains.
  3. This ensures that the food grains remain in good quality, and there is no spoilage of the food grains.
